Middle School Champions Crowned

Congratulations to first-year school Stewarts Creek Middle for winning the Rutherford County Middle School Championships today here at Smyrna!  Their match with Siegel Middle was a tight one early on, but the Falcons pulled away in the final two games for the 19-8 final score.  Middle School boy MVP Brandon Campbell led SCMS with a great 612 series, including games of 229 & 211.  Lane Dawson (198-584) and Cameron Hall (226-536) also bowled well for the winning Falcons.  Chris Haley led the Cavaliers with a 558 series, including games of 214 & 200.

We must also mention that most all of the bowlers for both teams are SBC youth league members!  Great bowling by both teams – congratulations on a great season!!

SBC youth bowlers take HS singles titles

SBC youth bowlers Keysha Martin (Lavergne HS) & former SBC bowler Wes Conatser (Upperman HS) took the Individual Titles last week in the TSSAA State High School Tournament, held here at Smyrna Bowling Center.

Conatser led wire-to-wire through the 14-game, two-day event and set the record for total pinfall in the Boys Division I competition.  Wes averaged 216 for the eight qualifying games to reach the match-play finals, then went 5-1 in the head-to-head competition to finish in first place, 136 pins ahead of Hardin County’s Chase Smith.

Miss Martin was her usual cool self on the outside, but was admittedly “nervous” on the inside while bowling her match-play round.  She averaged 196.87 for her 8 games of qualifying, then went 3-2 in her first five games of the finals.  Going into the final match, Keysha was in 2nd place, 29 pins behind Collierville’s Emily Nykiel.  With 30 bonus pins for a win in the match play, whoever wins the last game would be the champion.  Martin finished first with a 190 game, which left Nykiel a chance to win with 2 strikes & a 9 count.  Emily struck on the first ball in the final frame, but left a solid 10-pin on the next shot to give the title to Martin.

Several other SBC youth finished in the top 24 this year:  Laurel Everett (Wilson Central – 4th), Kara Ford (Smyrna – 10th), Samantha Gomes (Central Magnet – 20th), Brittany Sisco (Wilson Central – 21st), & Kylah Martin (Lavergne – 24th) finished high for the girls;  For the boys, it was:  John Petty (Wilson Central – 7th), Kyle Hubbuch (Wilson Central – 10th), Ronnie Claridy (Smyrna – 13th), Timothy Lewis (Smyrna – 17th), & Eric Lane (Wilson Central – 23rd).  Congratulations to all of the GREAT youth bowlers for outstanding performances in the State Tournament!

Ricker all “Hart” in Youth Tournament of Champions

Most 7 year old bowlers need all the help they can get.  They use bumpers and are content if they knock down any pins.  Ricker Hart, however, is not a typical 7 year old bowler.  The left-hander won the coveted Youth Summer Shootout Tournament of Champions on August 4th at Smyrna Bowling Center.  In doing so, Ricker bowled personal high games of 135 and 138 which more than doubled his average of 65. Moreover, Hart had to bowl 9 games which consisted of 5 qualifying games and 4 stepladder games.  He qualified in 4th place and won each of his 4 stepladder games on his way to victory, which came a mere 2 1/2 hours after his 8pm bedtime.  He also had to fight through a blister on his thumb for his last 6 tournament games and if all of that wasn’t enough – he had to bowl his sister in the first match game!

Michael Murrell, who led the qualifying with a scorching 1330 series, finished second.  Rounding out the top five were:  Zach Barrett, Drew Wiggins and Blake Hart. For his efforts, Ricker won a $200 scholarship which he can look forward to using…in 2022.

2011 Southern Gold Shootout promises to be the most exciting yet!

The 2011 Southern Gold Shootout will renew again this year on September 3-4, 2011.  This year’s tournament promises to be the most exciting yet with a new format for Junior Gold qualifying.  Each day of the tournament will crown a Junior Gold winner in both male and female divisions.  The winners from both days will bowl head-to-head for $200 in expense money!  This doubles the amount of spots awarded in previous years and adds even more excitement to the tournament.

The scholarship portion of the tournament remains the same with bowlers trying to reach the top six scores in both the male and female divisions.  Additionally, bowlers can re-enter in the scholarship portion of the tournament to try and get into the top six spots. Furthermore, the guaranteed 1st place scholarship has risen to $500 for the winning male and female, and the $3,000 for a 300 game remains an elusive but tantalizing prize.  Tournament directors hope to expand the impressive field of entries from last year’s tournament which included bowlers from:  Massachusetts, Minnesota, Virginia, Oklahoma, New York, Illinois, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Florida, and Tennessee.  For more information please contact Kelly Marlin at kelly@smyrnabowling.com or call 615-355-0501.
